Acupuncture for Increased Fertility

Medical Acupuncture has been applied in Western medicine as a primary or adjunctive therapy in various gynecological problems in recent years. According to the World Health Organization these conditions are dysmenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome, IVF etc.

Acupuncture can increase fertility by reducing stress, increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs and balancing the endocrine system, according to several studies and medical research. “The goal of an infertility treatment from a Chinese Medicine perspective is not just to get pregnant, but to stay pregnant and to have a healthy baby.

Many publications have proved that acupuncture helps fertility as:

  • Regulates the reproductive hormones
  • Increases blood flow to the ovaries and thereby improves the quality of the endometrium
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Improves the quantity, motility and morphology of sperm (in men).
  • Increases effectiveness of IVF (in vitro fertilization) and reduction of side effects due to:
  1. reduction of stress
  2. ovulation induction
  3. improving the quality of ova-reducing uterine tone consistently (ie. less use gonadotropins)
  4. reducing pain during oocyte retrieval
  5. better perfusion of the endometrium during transfer.
The acupuncture treatment includes an initial interview with the couple and a thorough history. Thereafter, ultra-thin, sterile needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body which reside on channels or meridians; these are pathways in both the exterior and interior of the body. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions.

There are NO side effects.
